Japanese Course Work

The following are a collection of the classes I have taken as a part of my Japanese Language program.

JAPN 1010: Elementary Japanese

The course is an introductory course and taught in English. Students learned basic kanji, hiragana, and katakana as well as basic grammar rules. Students were required to learn basic vocabulary and are able to speak about different topics such as general conversation, personal interests, and culture.

JAPN 1020: Elementary Japanese (Kansai University)

This course was done online with Kansai University in Japan and taught mostly in Japanese. Students would learn more complex grammar rules and be given time to speak with native speakers. Instructors would also teach students about cultural events in Japan and learn about them.

JAPN 2010: Intermediate Japanese 

This course was taught in Japanese and English. Students learned more advanced grammar and kanji and must be able to hold conversations in Japanese. They would learn how to tell people their wants and be able to describe gift giving.

JAPN 2020: Intermediate Japanese (Kansai University)

This was a study abroad program in Japan. Students would learn about a cultural aspect of Japan and create a presentation about it. Students would also join a class taught at Kansai University and learn grammar points and speak with Japanese students.

JAPN 3050: Japanese Conversation & Composition

JAPN 3050: Japanese Conversation & Composition

This course was taught in Japanese. Students learned advanced grammar and conversation skills. Students were expected to be able to write letters and draft essays about various topics.

JAPN 3060: Japanese Conversation & Composition

This course was taught in Japanese. Students were taught how to give instructions and debate their opinions to other people. Grammar was taught such that students could convey their ideas and write complex essays about these topics.

JAPN 4160: Japanese for International Business II

This course was taught in Japanese. Students learned different case studies about Japanese or American companies attempting to break into the market. The case studies showed how they succeeded or failed in different aspects when attempting to localize to the different markets.

JAPN 4010: Japanese Lit in Translation

This course was a summer study abroad program in Japan. Students were assigned a cultural topic to research during the program. Students were required to read books or articles pertaining to their topic and be able to present them to the class.

JAPN 4560: Japanese Film

This course was taught in English. Students would learn different filming techniques used in Japanese films and watch movies by influential directors. Students learned about the history and were able to analyze and critique the films.

Culture and Literature

The following are a collection of the classes I have taken that represent culture and literature.

ENGL 1030: Composition and Rhetoric

This course taught students how to create a persuasive piece. Students would create an argument and have to be able to back up this argument with evidence. Students learned how to effectively structure an argumentative piece.

ENGL 2020: Lit Forms and Creative Writing

This course taught students about creative writing. Students would read poems and short stories by authors and deduct their intent or learn different writing techniques. Students would also have to create their own creative writing pieces based around different topics or themes studied.

ANTH 2010: Introduction to Anthropology

An introductory course about the field of anthropology. Students learned about the early beginnings of humanity and how humans evolved into our modern counterparts. The course goes over the early humans and how different cultures grew throughout the early times.
